# Use a Static Fabric

## <mark style="color:blue;">A Note on Static Fabrics</mark>

It should be noted that it is not ideal to overuse static fabrics in your quilts and quilt blocks. We have created Fabric Links so that you can easily reuse the same fabric throughout a quilt in either your quilt blocks, border or binding. And these Fabric Links can be easily and rapidly updated or changed and that change will be pushed automatically to all pieces of your quilt that uses that Fabric Link.

However, if you use static fabrics, any changes you would like to make will need to be manually changed to each indiviudal piece that is static. There is no way to automatically bulk change a static fabric.

## <mark style="color:blue;">01 | Use in a Quilt Block</mark>

The only place you can use a static fabric is in a quilt block. In this Help Guide, we will edit an existing quilt block to use a static fabric, which can be either a solid static fabric or a static printed fabric.

### <mark style="color:blue;">a | Static Solid Fabric Swatch</mark>

In this example, we will edit an existing quilt block to use a **solid** static fabric.

1. On the left side control panel, click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**BLOCKS**</mark> tab.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/Ldm2OMGFjsbyTJTfeipH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
2. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Edit Block**</mark> button for the quilt block you'd like to change.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/heOjF47qjqyXgsuCJe4Q" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
3. The **Block Editor** panel will slide out.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/28fsmurc8vLD4HM1Z8up" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
4. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**block piece**</mark> that you'd like to change to a Static Fabric. When selected, there will be a light box outlining the selected block piece. The current connected Fabric Link (A) is highlighted.

   <figure><img src="/files/YioQmSU7nO1d8rFNLq7K" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
5. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Static Solids**</mark> tab.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/tiU4IwpP7DUIxohIcKfo" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
6. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**solid fabric swatch**</mark> you'd like to use as a solid static fabric for this block.

   * In this example, I've selected *Kona Coral*.

   <figure><img src="/files/tyLCQ80GPKR8pPU1HezX" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
7. If you click on the Fabric Links tab, you will now see that the block piece is using *Kona Coral* and that color is not associated to any Fabric Link. Click anywhere outside the fabric panel or block area to deselect and exit.&#x20;

8. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Save**</mark> button (<img src="/files/ZPanSooPSBnufFKAMdXV" alt="" data-size="line">) in the top right corner and select <mark style="color:blue;">**Save to Quilt**</mark>.

### <mark style="color:blue;">b | Static Printed Fabric Swatches</mark>

In this example, we will edit an existing quilt block to use a **printed** static fabric.

1. On the left side control panel, click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**BLOCKS**</mark> tab.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/Ldm2OMGFjsbyTJTfeipH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

3. The **Block Editor** panel will slide out.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/28fsmurc8vLD4HM1Z8up" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
4. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**block piece**</mark> that you'd like to change to a Static Fabric. When selected, there will be a light box outlining the selected block piece. The current connected Fabric Link (A) is highlighted.

   <figure><img src="/files/YioQmSU7nO1d8rFNLq7K" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
5. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Static Prints**</mark> tab.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/IxfmaoIPQwDkOMHBYziZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
6. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**printed fabric swatch**</mark> you'd like to use as a solid static fabric for this block.

   * In this example, I've selected *Gingham Checks in Taupe*.

   <figure><img src="/files/2w01pYrX04x1vdg2vUsi" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
7. If you click on the Fabric Links tab, you will now see that the block piece is using *Gingham Checks in Taupe* and that printed fabric swatch is not associated to any Fabric Link. Click anywhere outside the fabric panel or block area to deselect and exit.&#x20;

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.prequilt.com/prequilt-101/all-about-fabric/static-fabrics/use-a-static-fabric.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
