A Note on Swatch Dimensions

We’ve noticed that some companies have standard dimensions for their digital fabric swatches and we’ve used that information to create a little cheat sheet for you as a starting point or best guess for the dimensions of your digital fabric swatch.* All widths should be entered in inches.

Sometimes there are no dimensions for your digital fabric swatch and that can be frustrating. Our suggestion is to use your best guess (based on quilts you've seen that used that fabric) and put that guesstimate into the swatch width.

*Please use as a best guess, we cannot guarantee that your digital fabric swatch is actually using these dimensions.

01 | Set width for fabric swatch

If you have not yet set the dimensions for your digital fabric swatch, it will be highlighted in yellow.

Once you have your digital fabric swatch uploaded to PreQuilt, it can’t be accurately used until the width of the fabric swatch has been set. Without the width of your swatch, the application will not know how to scale it appropriately into your quilt components.

  1. From the Fabric Dashboard, click on the Edit button for the digital fabric swatch that you want to set the width for.

  2. Enter the width (in inches) of the digital fabric swatch in the top right box. In this example, we were lucky enough to have a ruler along the bottom edge of the swatch. I’ll use that dimension here.

  3. Click on the Save button.

02 | Crop the fabric swatch

Once the width of the digital fabric swatch is set, four separate DRAG buttons will appear on each side of the digital fabric swatch. These can be used to crop the digital fabric swatch.

  1. Click and hold onto the Drag button on the bottom of the digital fabric swatch.

  2. Move the blue line from the bottom of the digital fabric swatch up until it is above the ruler. You’ll notice that the ruler will become more translucent and almost hidden.

  3. Make sure to click on the Save button to retain these changes.

03 | Input general information & yardage

On the Swatch Info tab, we have enabled you to keep as little or as much information about your digital fabric swatches as you’d like. The only mandatory fields are a name for the digital fabric swatch and its width.

We have fields for you to be able to input:

  • Fabric Name

  • Colorway

  • Designer

  • Collection

  • Manufacturer

  • SKU

  • Inventory quantity (yardage or FQ)

To input general information for your digital fabric swatch and save this information:

  1. Click on the Swatch Info tab on the Fabric Swatch pop up.

  2. Enter the relevant information for the fields.

  3. On the right side, you can enter your fabric quantity (in yards).

  4. Or, if you only have a FQ, toggle the button to the right.

  5. Click on the Save button.

04 | Tag your fabric swatches

While editing the general swatch information of your digital fabric swatch, you can also add tags (works like a label) to it. This helps filter your fabric stash when you're looking for a particular kind of fabric to use in your quilt.

You can have up to 20 different tags in your account and each fabric swatch can be tagged with up to 4 different tags.

  1. Click on Show Suggested Tags to see the default tags created in PreQuilt.

  2. Click on the tag that makes the most sense for the digital fabric swatch. For this example, I’ll click on green.

  3. You can also create your own tag. To do this, type the name of the tag and press the enter button on your keyboard. For example, I’d like to tag all my Tula fabric.

  4. Don’t forget to click on the Save button.

05 | Bulk edit multiple fabric swatches

Sometimes you might want to import multiple digital fabric swatches that will have some of the same general information, such as collection name, designer name, or fabric width with the ruler to be cropped out. You don’t need to repeat the same edit or crop over and over, but rather you can do a bulk edit once that will be applied to all the selected digital fabric swatches.

To edit multiple digital fabric swatches at the same time (bulk edit):

  1. From the Fabric Dashboard, click on the toggle button so that it's pushed toward List View.

  2. Click on the checkboxes next to all the digital fabric swatches you’d like to edit at once.

  3. Then click on the Edit button on the left side above the list of fabric swatches.

  4. A pop-up window will appear. Any edits you make will apply to all the fabric swatches that were selected. This is expected and desired, since it’ll save a lot of time.

    • NOTE: The words Bulk Edit x4 appear on the image of the digital fabric swatch. This is to remind you that any edits you do will be applied to all 4 of the fabrics that were selected.

  5. Make the edits you’d like. In this example, I’m going to:

    • NOTE: I will not enter the colorway or SKU (since they are all the same fabric design, but in different colors. To add that unique information, I’ll need to edit each individual fabric swatch separately.

    • Set the width of the digital fabric swatch to 7.

    • Crop the image to remove the ruler.

    • On the Swatch Info tab, type the name of the designer, collection, and manufacturer. I’ll also enter the quantity of yardage I have for each fabric (0.5 yards).

  6. Make sure you don’t forget to click on the Save button to confirm these changes.
