TIP: Rotate your border pieces from length of fabric to width of fabric to use less yardage.

NOTE: If a piece is longer than the width of fabric, PreQuilt will automatically divide it into 2 pieces and include the seam allowance necessary to piece them together.

Fabric Cutting Diagrams

On the Fabric tab, you can see the summary of the cut fabric pieces needed for your quilt as well as a recommended cutting diagram for your fabric.

Please note that border pieces are defaulted to being cut along the length of fabric. If this is not your preference, you can rotate the border pieces. PreQuilt will automatically separate the border piece and add 1/2" seam allowance so that you have enough fabric to join the two pieces together for your border.

You can control the following variables:

  • Width of fabric (WOF)

  • Orientation of cut fabric pieces

Width of Fabric

In PreQuilt, we've defaulted the width of fabric (WOF) to 42". But we know that the width of fabric of your yardage can differ, especially if you're using something other than standard quilting cotton, so we've designed an input where you can set the WOF.

Once you change the WOF, PreQuilt will automatically update the cutting diagram for that particular fabric.

1

Scroll to the fabric that you'd like to change the WOF for.

2

In the top right corner of that fabric's box, use the arrows or type in the number for your width of fabric.

TIP: If you want to set this for all fabrics, then click on the Apply All button.

Rotate Border

We've defaulted all borders to be cut along the length of fabric. However, this can often be an inefficient use of fabric.

If you'd like to cut your borders along the width of fabric (oftentimes in multiple pieces) and sew them together, simply rotate the border pieces. We will also automatically add in the extra fabric for your seam allowance.

1

Locate the border piece you'd like to rotate in the table. Note that the dimensions for our west side border pieces is 2" x 52".

2

Click on the Rotate button next to that piece.

3

Your border piece will be rotated to run along the width of fabric and broken into two pieces. The two pieces now have their own IDs and the total width (formerly length) is now 52.5" (38" + 14.5"). The additional 0.5" is for the seam allowance needed to join the two border pieces together.

Rotate Cut Piece

Sometimes you might want to rotate your fabric piece in order to be more efficient with your cutting plan or yardage. No problem, just like your border piece, you can rotate your cut pieces as well.

1

Locate the fabric piece you'd like to rotate in the table.

2

Click on the Rotate button next to that piece.

3

You can see that the width and height dimensions have been switched.

You can see in this example that we were able to save 4" in yardage by rotating fabric piece b1. And in addition to saving fabric, it also is a more pleasant cutting experience, since the height of the entire row is the same on all strips.
