## Randomize Colors

Color randomization is the most commonly used randomize feature on PreQuilt. It's so well loved and used that there's a dedicated button for it on the central Toolbar (![](https://667278489-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FPUFswdysHBJDPIJC9xe0%2Fuploads%2FlC0vli6AXZ25ac9GTetZ%2F00%20button.png?alt=media\&token=4ebd2522-0ad3-421b-b926-00e8ac175b19))!

To lock a Fabric Link, click on the lock button next to the color tag's edit button.

The **Color Randomizer button** (![](https://667278489-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FPUFswdysHBJDPIJC9xe0%2Fuploads%2FaMcrsVWE5EgyA3mit9xN%2F00%20button.png?alt=media\&token=994baa63-2d1f-48a9-813f-2e7ebc14b2bd)) is a powerful and playful feature in PreQuilt that can help jump start your color palettes. When you click it, PreQuilt will randomly assign solid swatches to all the unlocked color tags.

I often use the Color Randomizer as a starting point to find a few randomly assigned Fabric Links that I like and work well together. Then I'll manually change the other color tags until I have a final color palette that I'd like to work with.

1. On the quilt grid's digital design wall, click on the **Randomize Colors** button (![](https://667278489-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FPUFswdysHBJDPIJC9xe0%2Fuploads%2FNifqC3OpMRAHDWOz7C3K%2F00%20button.png?alt=media\&token=9630a445-10af-470b-acfc-c598d1dd2384)) on the Toolbar.
2. Once you find a color swatch that you like for a Fabric Link that you don't want to change, lock it by clicking on the padlock button () to the left of the Fabric Link's edit button.
3. Continue clicking on the **Randomize Colors** button (and locking and unlocking Fabric Links) until you find a color palette that you want to proceed to construction with.
4. Don't forget to periodically click on the **Save** button () to save your quilt.
