FYI: When we started PreQuilt, we only had the capability to use solid color swatches and so we named this feature 'Color Tags'. As the application grew, that term became quite limiting, and so in 2023 we renamed the feature Fabric Link.
Each quilt has three default Fabric Links (A, B, and C) that you can edit to your preference. Fabric links can be connected to either solid fabric swatches or printed fabric swatches.
In this section, you will learn how to:
Create new fabric links
Change the fabric connected to a fabric link
Change a fabric link's name
Delete a fabric link
Click on the FABRIC LINKS tab on the .
Click on the Create Fabric Link button.
A fourth Fabric Link has been added, Fabric Link D, with a default color of Kona Baby Pink.
Since each new Fabric Link uses the default color, Kona Baby Pink, you will most likely want to change it.
Fabric links can be connected to both solid fabric swatches and printed fabric swatches.
The Fabric Link panel (also called Fabric Library Panel) will slide out and by default is on the Solids tab. Using the dropdown menu, click on your preferred solid fabric manufacturer.
In this example, I'll select my favorite, Paintbrush Studio.
Click on the swatch for Fabric Link D's new solid fabric.
In this example, I'll select Blush.
After clicking on the swatch, the panel will close and you will now see the new fabric connected to Fabric Link D.
TIP: For more information on printed fabric swatches, we have a complete Help Guide!
The Fabric Link panel (also called Fabric Library Panel) will slide out and by default is on the Solids tab. Click on the PRINTS tab.
Click on the Select button for the printed fabric swatch that you'd like to link to Fabric Link D.
Once selected, a control panel for the printed fabric swatch will be highlighted.
You will now see the new fabric connected to Fabric Link D.
The default naming convention of fabric links in PreQuilt is A, B, C, etc. But you can change the names of the fabric links at any time.
NOTE: We especially encourage designers to ensure that the fabric link naming convention matches the naming convention in their written quilt pattern. This will ensure that when someone goes to make that quilt, fabrics are not accidentally mixed up.
TIP: If using a numbered naming convention (and you have 10 or more fabric links), it's suggested to add a 0 before your numbers 1-9, so that they are ordered from 01-10+.
To change a Fabric Link's name:
Click on the FABRIC LINKS tab on the left side control panel.
Click on the Edit button for the fabric link you'd like to rename.
The Fabric Link panel will slide out. At the top of the Fabric Link panel, click on the pencil next the current name of the fabric link.
The text inside the name box will be highlighted. Type in the fabric link's new name.
You can now see that the name of the first fabric link has been changed from "A" to "01".
ALERT: Keep in mind that when you delete a Fabric Link you will disconnect block pieces that are using that Fabric Link.
Any block piece that is disconnected will automatically use the default static fabric of Kona Duckling. This color is often a quick way to identify static fabrics being used unintentionally.
From the dropdown, click on delete.
The Fabric Link D is now deleted.
Click on the Edit button () for Fabric Link D.
Click on the Edit button () for Fabric Link D.
To close the panel, click on the x () at the top.
Click on the x button () in the top right corner of the Fabric Link panel to close it.
From the Fabric Links tab, click on the three dots button () next to the Fabric Link that you want to delete.
