Orphan Blocks are leftover or extra blocks that have not been used in a quilt.
A Use Case for Orphan Blocks
PreQuilt is an excellent tool for figuring out how best to use any of your Orphan Blocks. Not only can you load your pieced blocks into PreQuilt, but you can also randomly place them into a quilt grid and randomly rotate them.
Here's an example of some scrap blocks I had leftover from a previous project. I had only one of each, so I loaded pictures of the blocks into PreQuilt and then used its randomization features to come up with a fun design to use up my orphan blocks.
